The February writing challenge with Anita continues. It’s day four and time to examine community.
com·mu·ni·ty ~ a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals
I remember when I was a kid and community was the little town I grew up in. We were all in the community together attending the same school and a few of the same churches. Our values were very similar as was our Scandinavian heritage.
Then one day I grew up and moved to a big city and to a different state far from home. I thought it would be a grand adventure. It was different and lots of unknowns became the norm. I thought the adventure would make for a spectacular new life. But now I look back and have a much different perspective. What I know now, but didn’t realize then is…
I lost a big part of my small (and special) community. I lost a piece of myself, my family, my heritage, and even a piece of my heart, which I have yet to get back. I’m reminded of a scene from Sweet Home Alabama about losing a piece of your heart. And although I didn’t grow up in the South, I can relate to the people living in the small town and how it’s not a bad thing to stay in a small town.
Over the years, I have had times a strong community in my newfound home far from the beauty, security, and familiar small town. But in reality, I have now found that the place where my foundation was built is still my preferred community.
Community it’s a special word, a special place that reminds me of a special life I lived many years ago.
Blessings to you ~ Carrie
